Germany:08 Meissen

Up

Meissen dom
The cathedral and castle are on top of a tall hill, but you can take a funicular lift up to the top. This is your first sight.

Meissen dom
The towers of the cathedral are all open work, very interesting and lovely

Albrechtsburg
Right next to the cathedral is the castle of the Margraves/Electors/Dukes of Saxony

Part of the defense works by the castle

Albrechtsburg
Yes, slightly blurry, but nice, though heavy, vaulting

Tiled floor

One side of a small chapel off the main hall

Albrechtsburg
The center of the chapel

Albrechtsburg
The other side of the chapel. The castle had suffered from age and misuse, and the decoration is mostly 19th century ideas of what medieval should look like.

Another view of the main hall, showing the window seats

Albrechtsburg
The "Grand Front Room" as they call it, very nice, but the statues of famous kings and nobles aren't really necessary

Albrechtsburg
Even the ceiling is nice

Albrechtsburg
A look down the room

Albrechtsburg
A buffet, I suppose. The furniture is not original to the castle, though much of it is old enough

Albrechtsburg
Nice desk with a laid-back chair

A secretary, notice the iron hinges to drop the writing table down

Albrechtsburg
Interesting archway, with overlapping arches at top

Albrechtsburg
This is Meissen, after all, where they invented Meissen (and Dresden) porcelain. Right here in the castle - the process was a state secret.

If you're the ruler, you get your arms on the service.

More porcelain

Albrechtsburg
Porcelain stove, the fire inside radiates heat into the room. I've seen them in use in Prague, and they work well.
