Ireland Pictures:16 Trim Castle

Up

Trim
Trim - our B&B - Highfield House

Trim
An old priory in the area

Trim
Another stray ruin - the Yellow Steeple. Okay, it's gray and not very much like a steeple. I just report the names, I don't explain them.

Trim
Trim Castle - big and impressive

Trim
A former entrance and gatehouse, with the keep sticking up behind

Trim
Lots of walls

Trim
Looking through the old entrance

Trim
Tower of the curtain wall, and the keep

Trim
Gatehouse again

Trim
A back door or postern. Castles sometimes had such things for easier access to the grounds or a dry moat. Sometimes called a "sally port" for sallying out to attack the enemy, or used as an escape hatch.

Trim
These pictures were taken around behind the castle, and almost cost me a visit inside. The guides were closing the gate as we came up, but had pity on us and let us in.

Trim
The keep

Back of a tower

It was a very big castle, and we're still walking around it.

The castle has sustained lots of damage over the centuries.

Trim
The dark opening at the top is a door, the lit opening in the middle is probably a window, the lower one is a doorway.

Trim
Lots of places inside were blocked off as too dangerous for tourists.

Trim
Another piscina

Trim
Some of the original plaster, badly stained

Trim
Steps up to a door going to someplace that isn't there anymore.

Trim
The floors, of course, disappeared long ago

Trim
The River Boyne and countryside beyond

Trim
Again, with some of the external walls

Trim
Stairs, old stone and modern wood, with modern handrail.

Trim
The current gatehouse to the castle, from upstairs

Trim
A building along the river

Trim
Where there used to be a building along the river
