Clonmacnoise
Clonmacnoise - fabulous carved crosses. These are the originals. Outside, there are copies to show how they looked in place.

Clonmacnoise
Carved on all sides

Clonmacnoise
And all the carvings are different

Clonmacnoise
On all four sides

Clonmacnoise
Lots of different patterns

Clonmacnoise
A cross with a halo is typical

Clonmacnoise
But the decoration on the cross varies

Clonmacnoise
Sometimes a lot from front to back

Clonmacnoise
Plaque? Grave marker? Nicely carved anyway

Clonmacnoise
Intricate knotwork on this column

Clonmacnoise
Different knots on this side

Clonmacnoise
And this side, too

Clonmacnoise
This was a big, famous monastery, with lots of buildings still standing, if incomplete.

Clonmacnoise
Towers were necessary because even in Catholic medieval Ireland, attacks on monasteries were frequent. According to Wikipedia, "It was attacked frequently during these four centuries, mostly the Irish (at least 27 times), the Vikings (at least 7 times) and Normans (at least 6 times)."

Clonmacnoise
The main church on the left

Clonmacnoise
Next to it, a chapel

Clonmacnoise
The tower again. The door is elevated, accessed by a ladder or wooden staircase in the old days. Why make it easy for raiders to get in?

A copied cross in place on the grounds

Clonmacnoise
The other side

Clonmacnoise
Graves in the church. Being buried near the church was good. Being buried inside was even better.

Clonmacnoise
A bit of wall

Clonmacnoise
Chapel

Clonmacnoise
Doorway

Clonmacnoise
Bell tower?

Clonmacnoise
Gable end of a building

Clonmacnoise
Another chapel

Clonmacnoise
Inside, with two small windows and graves

Clonmacnoise
There's a side window, too.

Clonmacnoise
Back of the chapel

Clonmacnoise
Temple Ciaran, early 10th century

Clonmacnoise
Another view

Clonmacnoise
Yes, it's small

Clonmacnoise
And mostly ruined

Clonmacnoise
But it reminds us of the smaller scale of early monastic centers.

Clonmacnoise
Another tower

Clonmacnoise
Another chapel

Clonmacnoise
The church

Clonmacnoise
Entrance to the church

Clonmacnoise
Nice, but I don't know what it is

Clonmacnoise
But this goes with it

Clonmacnoise
Temple Connor

Clonmacnoise
Temple Connor

Clonmacnoise
The odd tower from earlier. Four windows, no apparent way to get in. Is it a bell tower, or what?

Clonmacnoise
The Shannon River

Clonmacnoise
European robin.
