Obviously, this is mostly of interest to me, and my friends, but if you're a stranger who just happened upon it, feel free to look around. There's not much that's profound, but some of the pictures are quite nice. There are lots of pictures of castles, cathedrals, abbeys and, as my sister says, places without roofs.
I use some personal "inside jokes" throughout my texts. For instance, I often refer to a stretch of road as being a "Grand Prix course." This means that it is a road with a lot of twists and turns, often sharp, even blind corners, and often with lots of hills. In other words, a real challenge to drive on.
Another "in joke" refers to "inspector generals." On a trip in 1983 (not yet posted here) my friend Tim and I drove around Germany in a Fiat Panda rented in Luxemburg. After driving around one town several times looking for our hotel, we decided that the locals must be bewildered by all these Fiat Pandas from Luxemburg and suspect they were being invaded. We therefore named ourselves the Luxemburg Invasion Army. He was more interested in weapons, so he got the rank of Inspector General of Arms and Armor. I preferred castles, so I became the Inspector General of Forts and Fortifications. OK, you had to be there.
Covid killed travel for years. Finally, in 2024, I went to the Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. I had never been to this part of Europe before. You can follow this trip by going HERE.
In 2019, I went to Italy. I had seen a bit of Rome and Venice while on a cruise (not posted here yet) but not much, and it didn't really count as "seeing" Italy. You can follow this trip by going HERE.
In 2018, I went to England again. This is the second half of the trip I made in 2017 (just below). I went to the north and east of England on this trip. You can follow this trip by going HERE.
In 2017, I went to England. I was last here in 1981, and the pictures from that trip will be added later. I had a long list of places I wanted to see, so long that I had to break it into two pieces. The first trip was to southern England, and in 2018 I hit the northern part of the country. You can follow this trip by going HERE.
In 2016, I went to central Europe, on my own, visiting Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Slovenia, Germany, and Czechia (the Czech Republic). Many of the places were ruled by Habsburgs, in the Austrian Empire or the Holy Roman Empire, so I call this the Habsburg capitals tour. Slovenia was part of the Austrian Empire, and the home of my mother's parents. You can follow this trip by going HERE.
In 2014, I went to Ireland again (see below for the first trip), with my sister Dolores and my friend Marty. You can follow this trip by going HERE.
In 2013, I went to Germany, also on my own, visiting the northern half of the country. You can follow this trip by going HERE.
In 2010, I went to France on my own, traveling through the Loire valley and Normandy. You can follow this trip by going HERE.
In 2008, I went to Ireland with my sister Dolores, and two friends, Winifred and Aleid. You can follow this trip by going HERE.
In 1999, I went to Germany, Czech Republic, and Austria. This was before I got a digital camera, so there are currently no pictures. It will take a lot of scanning to create a proper album of them. But my travel diary is HERE.
In 1984 I went to Paris with my family for Mother's Day. You can follow this trip by going HERE.
In 1983 I went to Germany with a friend named Tim. You can follow this trip by going HERE.
In 1981,Winifred and I went to England with some friends from the Society for Creative Anachronism, Laurelen and his wife Ithriliel. (They like to pretend they’re Tolkienish Elves.) (He also was a big fan of King Arthur, so we visited a lot of Arthurian sites.) No travel diary, but we went all over England, Wales, and Scotland. See the pictures HERE.
In 1979 I went to Europe for the second time, still with my girlfriend Winifred. We visited the Netherlands Belgium, Luxembourg, and Paris. You can follow this trip by going HERE.
In 1976 I went to Europe for the first time, with my girlfriend Winifred. (She wound up marrying someone else, but we still vacation together sometimes.) You can follow this trip by going HERE.
